Inside City Pantry

Queensland’s Chief Health Officer applauds healthy vending machine options

In our modern world, improving and maintaining personal wellbeing has become a hot topic. We all want to experience the benefits of a healthy mind and body, but often feel as though being healthy is something that is complicated or it simply takes too much time.

When it comes to eating well, we lead busy lives and as a result, often choose unhealthy convenient food options. This trend was on the tip of many tongues during the launch of City Pantry at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) in August. City Pantry is an emporium of fresh food vending machines featuring the well-known BananaBar and Fruitbar.

According to guest speaker at the launch, Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeanette Young, our hectic lives have created a call for healthy living that is convenient.

“We really do need more opportunities to make healthier behaviours the norm – we’ve gotten out of the habit of doing the right thing by our bodies,” said Dr Young.

“Our research has found only 7.4% of Queensland adults consume fruit and vegetables at the recommended levels per day. Access to fresh produce as a vending option takes some of the effort out of improving health and wellbeing. It gives people the ability to purchase a wide range of wholesome food 24 hours a day.”

During her speech, Dr Young reinforced the importance of eating meals packed full of fruits and vegetables that are loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

“It isn’t difficult to include fruit and vegetables in our diets and this ‘pantry’ provides more opportunities for people to eat nutritious food when they aren’t at home. And, the food in City Pantry is grown locally.”

The team at City Pantry would love to hear how you rate our fresh fruit and gourmet salads. Do you have a favourite item in the pantry? What other healthy treats would you like us to include in the future?

Look out for vending specials from your local pantry.

Bon Appétit from the City Pantry team!

“We really do need more opportunities to make healthier behaviours the norm – we’ve gotten out of the habit of doing the right thing by our bodies,” said Dr Young.
